Celebrating 25 Years at Focus Micro Systems

Callum and Duncan Samuel – It is with great pride that we would like to congratulate Peter for his 25 years service with Focus Micro Systems. Peter has played an integral part in the development of our Focus suite of software and will continue to play a key role within Focus over the coming years.

Peter Haynes – I started working at Focus Micro Systems back in July 1990, following a government training scheme work placement programme called Employment Training.

Although not starting out as a programmer, I used to watch the programmers at the time with interest, and when Duncan Samuel (the managing director) asked me to become involved in the programming I was in my element.

At that time we were writing DOS based packages until one day in 1998 Duncan asked me to convert our software packages into Windows. I started using the current languages at the time which were Visual Basic 6.0 with an Access 97 back end database, and using Crystal Reports for our reports.

More recently, in 2012 we began using SQL Server for our back end databases which was far more robust and reliable. This allowed us to provide software for much larger networks and also have an option for cloud-based applications, which allow our software to be run from anywhere on pretty much any device.

Over the years I have been a major part of the company’s growth into what is now one of the country’s leading property management and lettings software providers. Our packages cover residential, commercial, agricultural property management, lettings and sales, along with business transfers. Focus now have over 4,500 users of our main package, called “RENT”.

We are now in the process of converting all of our products into one main product which will allow more efficient programming, which will be written in C#, and use the proven SQL Server databases. This will keep Focus at the forefront of the market for many years to come.
